Discovering Canada Starts Here

Ottawa isn't a tourist destination. It's a statement of belonging.

In a category dominated by Niagara Falls and Montreal, Ottawa needed more than awareness. It needed a reason that only one audience in Canada would feel.

The Brief

Ottawa consistently lost tourism mindshare to Niagara Falls, Blue Mountain, and Montreal among GTA immigrant audiences — seen as a government city rather than a destination worth choosing.

The Pivot

My boss, the VP, had an idea — Around the Corner — positioning Ottawa as the overlooked gem hiding in plain sight. It was a good idea. But there was another one underneath it.

Canada didn't start in Toronto. It didn't start in Vancouver. It started here. As someone who had arrived in Canada in 2018 and was still figuring out what it meant to belong to this country, that hit differently. Ottawa wasn't just the capital. It was the proof that this place had chosen to exist — and for immigrants still finding their footing in it, visiting Ottawa wasn't tourism. It was something closer to citizenship.

It wasn't a fair fight between the two ideas. But the client felt what I felt. And that was that.

The Execution

A TVC rooted in nationalistic pride, paired with a print and advertorial travelogue format — educational, warm, and designed to earn attention rather than interrupt. Targeted at two distinct immigrant segments with different relationships to Canada.

"Ottawa isn't just a city — it's the embodiment of the country immigrants have chosen. The strategy made that emotional logic explicit."
The Solution

Integrated campaign positioning Ottawa as the first stop on every immigrant's true Canadian journey — changing the frame from sightseeing to identity.
